Reading, Writing, Speaking: The Metacognition Connection
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 12:00pm MST
Metacognitive practices help students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses as readers and writers as well as speakers, problem solvers, and group members. The question for teachers and students is not simply, “what are you learning?”, but “how are you learning?”. This session will clarify the connection between language and metacognition and provide ways for teachers to incorporate explicit strategies to support students in becoming more metacognitively active learners.

Why is Reading and Writing in the Subject Areas So Hard?!?
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:30pm - 4:00pm MST
Students require specialized skills to be able to cope with the different reading and writing demands of the subject areas. The language demands of each subject is unique and the ways in which students are required to communicate may not cross over from one discipline to another. This session will provide teachers with practical and useful tools that students can use to visualize, organize and structure their thinking to improve their reading, writing and communicating across all subject areas.
