"Pinball" Clemons - Keynote
Thursday February 20, 2025 8:45am - 10:00am MST
Few people exemplify the qualities of personal excellence, teamwork, community leadership, and overcoming the odds better than CFL legend Michael “Pinball” Clemons. With boundless energy, Clemon’s talks centre on the potential for each of us to achieve anything we set our minds to. Unabashedly emotional and impactful, he shows audiences how to put heart into everything they do.

Clemons joined the National Football League in 1987, and CFL’s Toronto Argonauts in 1989. He was nicknamed “Pinball” because of his running style — his diminutive size and extraordinary balance allowed him to “bounce” between defensive players, drawing comparisons to a pinball machine.

Clemons won the Grey Cup in 1991, 1996, and 1997 with the Argonauts, and was honoured with the CFL’s “most outstanding player” award in 1990, after setting the single-season record for all-purpose yards. He played his last game as an Argonaut in 2000, before becoming head coach of the team in the same year. He led the football club to six consecutive East Division Finals, including the 2004 championship, concluding his coaching tenure with 68 wins — the second highest in the team history.

In 2007, Clemons stepped down as head coach to become the chief executive officer, and in 2009, he was appointed as the vice-chair of the team. In 2019, Clemons was named the 20th general manager of the Toronto Argonauts.

Clemons is also the founder of the Pinball Clemons Foundation, a non-profit organization that empowers youth through education. Since it’s founding in 2007, it’s been responsible for the construction of a hospital in Uganda, over 200 schools in developing countries, two orphanages in Haiti, and locally awarded more than 200 scholarships.

In recognition of his work, Clemons received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Meritorious Service Cross, and is a member of the Order of Ontario. He has also been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Designing Reliable and Fair Selected-Response Questions that Increase Student Success
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
It can be a difficult to design test questions that avoid reliability errors and provide students the best opportunity to succeed. The construction of selected-response questions is challenging as there exist numerous specific guidelines that should be followed to achieve a high degree of reliability and fairness. Using guidelines found in several resources, this session will outline steps that should be observed when designing questions through a mixture of direct instruction and cooperative analysis of existing questions. We will also decipher erroneous questions and address how to improve them to increase fairness and reliability. Question types will include binary, matching, and multiple-choice questions. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of their own quizzes, tests, and exams to analyse against the information provided. Finally, this session will focus on assessment reliability and its importance, tying it back to question design, providing strategies for avoiding structural errors that impact student learning and results.

Unlocking Motivation: How to Reach and Reignite Disengaged Teens in Learning
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
When good students suddenly “stop caring”, it’s shocking and disheartening for teachers and parents. No matter what anyone does to try to get them back on track, it seems impossible to motivate them to even try (or in some cases, even show up). From the outside, it looks like they got in with a bad crowd and are hijacking their academic career to fit in. Threats and punishments do little to pull them up from their free fall and often yield the opposite result: pushing them toward even riskier behaviour. Believe or not, even the so-called “lazy” kids secretly wish they were doing better in school. The problem is no amount of “shaming” them or their parents is going to get them care about school. So what then? Parenting coach and teen advocate, Aly Pain talks about what’s going on behind the lack of motivation and why traditional intervention methods don’t work. She discusses how the developing teenaged brain influences their ability to cope with stressors and how focusing on emotional support is the key to success. Key Take-Aways: · The Bad Kid/Bad Parent Myth – Aly busts the belief that if you could just get the parents to engage with their student, everything would be fine. The reality is most parents are doing everything they can think of to get their student to perform. · The Most Common Reasons WHY Good Students Go Bad – Aly shares what troubled teens and their parents tell her is behind the lack of motivation (and what teachers and parents can do about it). Spoiler alert: it’s not what you think. · How to Support Students and Engage the Parents – Aly discusses concrete strategies to support struggling students in school and how to engage parents to do the same at home.

Helping Students Navigate Academic Vocabulary Across Subject Areas
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
Students require specialized skills to be able to cope with the demands of disciplinary text. As students move up in secondary grades, the language of the texts they engage with becomes more specialized and precise, and the language more academic. Academic vocabulary (often referred to as Tier 2 Academic Words) is problematic for students to master, as academic vocabulary can take on dramatically different meanings depending on the usage. As the knowledge students engage with becomes more formalized and complex, so too do the patterns of language that construct that knowledge. This session will take a look at patterns of language and some of the problems with academic vocabulary. Teachers will come away with practical and useful tools that students can use to visualize, organize and structure their thinking to improve their reading, writing and communicating across all subject areas.

Are screens helpful or harmful for language development? 4.) Where are the places that language learning occurs most successfully? 5.) How can home, school, and outside contexts be transformed into language-rich environments? 6.) Why is language development so vital to a child's social, academic, and future vocational success? 7.) Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
With so many of our students needing intervention to bridge the gaps created by learning interruptions, how do we meet each student’s specific needs? This session will highlight how implementing a large-scale intervention can be an effective way to improve literacy levels for all students. Phonemic awareness and phonics skills are assessed and students are placed in small, flexible groups to receive instruction on a specific reading or pre-reading skill (such as rhyming, letter sounds, blends, long vowels, etc.). Whether you start with just a couple of classes, a couple of grades, or the whole school, this approach can be beneficial for all students- performing below, at, or above grade level. Join me to learn about this locally developed program, with numerous samples and resources shared.

Weekdays ‘Til 6: A simple solution to a complex problem
Thursday February 20, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
Six years ago, as a large rural school division, we looked in the mirror and realized that we had created an environment in which digital communication (emails and texts) continued every evening and every weekend. As teachers, support staff, and leaders, we didn't have a stopping cue. It was a complex problem because smartphones and mobile devices were fairly new addictions that were pulling everyone into ongoing non-urgent, sometimes emotional communication 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our solution? Weekdays 'Til 6. It is a powerful and positive cultural norm that we've now enjoyed for six years. 'Weekdays at 6:00 p.m.' is our stopping cue. We don't email or text each other on evenings or weekends. Instead, we encourage our staff to rest, exercise, spend time with family/friends, and enjoy deep work time where necessary without distraction. Weekday's 'Til 6 is not a policy or procedure. It is a cultural norm that is good for our people, like kindness, laughter, sleep and nutrition. It is a simple solution that solves a complex problem for 2,000 really good people that work hard every day and deserve a break.

Ungrading: Replacing the tyranny of ranking, rating, and failing
Thursday February 20, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
Why do we grade, and at what cost? This session critically examines the harmful effects of percentages, letter grades, and ranking practices, especially on neurodiverse and marginalized learners. Rooted in systemic ableism and power dynamics, grades perpetuate inequities, foster competition, and create divisive learning cultures that often prioritize compliance over genuine growth. Drawing on Jesse Stommel’s work (2023), we will explore how the practice of 'ungrading' shifts the focus to care-based feedback and assessment practices that centre equity, wellness, and collaboration. Stommel reminds us that “grades are inequitable” and that rethinking assessment requires asking hard questions about who assessment is truly for and how it can become a liberatory practice. Together, we will discuss actionable steps to dismantle the grading status quo and build learning environments that empower students as co-authors of their education without grades -- all the while not losing authentic engagement and rigour. This session invites educators to imagine a better future for teaching and learning—one rooted in compassion, reflection, and an ethic of relationality outside the oppression of grades.

Financial Wellness - it's more than just investments!
Thursday February 20, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
Why is it important to prioritize our financial well-being? Being financially prepared is essential because it's not just about money; it's a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Neglecting financial health can lead to stress and affect mental well-being, making it harder to navigate life's challenges. For educators, who often prioritize the needs of others over their own, focusing on personal wellness, including financial wellness, is imperative. Studies show that 40% of financially unstable Canadians experience stress related to their finances. This stress permeates their work life, with 88% reporting frequent worries and 49% admitting it affects their job performance. But what if there were simple tools that could alleviate this stress? This session aims to provide such tools, offering practical steps that can be implemented easily. In this session, you will learn how to identify any financial gaps that you may have, how to prepare for the unknown (financial emergencies and unexpected costs), and how to plan for your expected financial needs (home downpayment, kids' post-secondary tuition, additional retirement funds). We will explore investment options, look at market dynamics, and using our core strategies we will set you up to make informed financial decisions. Being financially prepared isn't just about avoiding financial pitfalls; it's about building resilience and understanding and securing peace of mind in the face of life's uncertainties. Financial Wellness high-overview 1. Identifying financial gaps that you may have 2. Plan for the unknown 3. How to get started 4. Investment and insurance options to help close the gaps 5. Core strategies for success

Respect and Boundaries: The Secret Behind Well-Behaved Classrooms with Cool Factor
Thursday February 20, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
Why is it the “favourite” teachers have the best-behaved classes? Is it the secret candy stash in their desk, their silly mental health breaks, their ability to make a boring subject fun, or something else? Chances are it’s their boundaries. Those teachers have mastered the ability to command the respect of their students and in doing so, their students understand and adhere to the rules of the classroom. That doesn’t mean teachers need to tighten their rein. On the contrary, traditional views about power and authority only lead to more rebellion. The trouble is the concept of boundaries has become twisted to mean greater compliance using more controls. Parenting coach and teen advocate, Aly Pain will share why teachers and parents need to model the respect they want from teens. She discusses the toxic cycle of resentment, retaliation, revenge and resignation that is triggered by teen defiance and how shifting your behaviour is the key to changing theirs. Key Take-Aways: · Why Students Don’t Respect You (and How to Change that Dynamic) – Aly explains how teachers lose their students’ respect and what they can do to turn that toxic dynamic around. · How to Earn Their Respect Without Losing Yours – Aly discusses how teachers don’t have to give up control or become the fun teacher in order to earn their respect. · The Secret to Winning Over the “Problem” Kids – Aly shares what’s really going in with the problem kids and the simple way to win them over.

The Truth About Supporting ADHD Students and Why Outdated Methods Aren’t Working
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm MST
ADHD is not what you’ve been told: an inability to pay attention and sit still. The common misconception is if the student would only try harder, do the work, and focus like they do on video games, they could overcome their academic struggles. This only serves to reinforce the belief that ADHD is purposeful defiance, failure to comply with your requests, or meet basic standards. This causes the ADHD student to lose confidence in their own abilities, triggering a lifetime of underachievement and struggle. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for managing ADHD. Supporting ADHD students starts with understanding how the ADHD brain processes information (yes, they’re all unique) and helping them tap into their strengths. Parenting coach and teen advocate, Aly Pain, herself an ADHD adult and parent to an ADHD child, will talk about what it’s like to be able to excel at one thing and be utterly stumped by another, and how understanding her own brain has helped her unlock her own potential. Key Take-Aways: · What Having ADHD Feels Like in a School Environment – Aly shares how ADHD brains process information and how that leads to frustration in structured environments like school. · How to Help Your ADHD Students Succeed in a Neuro-Normal World – Aly talks about why the typical “try harder” advice isn’t helpful and actually does more harm than good. She shares how teachers can play a key role in their success in a neuro-normal world. · The Key to Creating Effective Adaptions that Work – Aly explains how to identify the unique ADHD characteristics and match them to effective adaptations.

Teaching is a Joke - Learning Through Laughing
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm MST
Brian Dawydiuk has been teaching for the better part of two decades. In that time he has learned, usually through his own mistakes, valuable lessons about how to be a better educator. Aside from teaching, Brian is a headlining stand up comedian who has entertained crowds throughout western Canada. In this session Brian will engage the audience with embarrassing, hilarious, inspiring and sometimes bizarre stories from his teaching career and personal life designed to reinforce the idea of taking risks, embracing mistakes and growing through failure. Brian will also outline how he incorporates comedy into his lessons and how effective humour is in a classroom. Brian will tell stories of his time teaching in the third lowest ranked school in England, working as a substitute teacher and stories as a teacher in various schools in Southern Alberta. At the end of the session, Brian will field questions from the audience about how to incorporate comedy into the classroom or any other inquiry that may be inspired during the presentation. The goal of this session for the audience to leave the session with a new perspective on their own practice, ideas to bring into the classroom on Monday and inspiration to take some risks and try new things. Even if that goal isn't met, Brian wants the audience leaving with a smile.

Unlocking the Vault: Secrets of Exemplary Football Programs in Alberta
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:30pm - 2:30pm MST
Through a two year study, McIntyre discovered 5 concepts that resonated through the exceptional football programs of the Raymond Comets, St. Francis Browns of Calgary, Calgary Dinosaurs (80s) , Edmonton Huskies (60s) and Edmonton Eskimos (50s). These programs had a profound impact on the individuals and the communities they served. After interviewing close to one hundred people, Ron acquired an appreciation for the nuances of these highly successful teams. Through storytelling and examples, Ron will unlock the vault and reveal the practices of men such as Gary Deman, Peter Connellan, Dennis Kadatz and Normie Kwong. It is McIntyre’s belief that the best practices of these exemplar programs are timeless and have implications for the classroom as coaching and teaching are intricately intertwined.

While a significant portion of this full-day session will focus on making various types of journals from scratch, much of our attention will be on showing how teachers can apply metacognitive journal writing strategies in the courses they teach. Addressing the Mental Health Epidemic: Supporting Students in the Classroom and Beyond
Thursday February 20, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm MST
With more than 42% of students feeling persistently sad or hopeless, and 22% seriously considered suicide, it’s fair to say mental health has become an epidemic for teenagers (CDC 2021)! This struggle is spilling into classrooms and making teaching harder than ever. Vaping, risky behaviours, absenteeism, substance abuse, failing grades are all symptoms of a much bigger problem: our students are seriously struggling. If not addressed now, these mental health problems will follow them into adulthood. The trouble is teenagers are more insecure and less able to cope than ever before. Even with effective limitations, social media is the 24/7 comparison device that never places them on the winning side of unrealistic standards. Parenting coach and teen advocate, Aly Pain explains how the immature emotional filter interprets even the most innocuous comments and twists them into harsh criticism. She discusses how teachers can help students develop the emotional aptitude and resilience needed to grow into healthy, happy adults. Key Take-Aways: · The Pressure to be Perfect – Aly talks about where the drive to be perfect is coming from and how teachers and parents can support their success without pushing performance. · Not the WHAT But the WHY – Aly discusses the importance of shifting away from focusing on the bad behaviours to understanding the reasons behind these coping mechanisms. · Compassion over Consequences – Aly shares why consequences rarely work on teenagers and how empathy can help overcome relationship struggles and unlock their internal motivation.

Brain bins are easy to create tools that support students' self-regulation development through play. Backed by neuroscience research, brain bins support students in becoming regulated and ready to learn in an inclusive classroom environment. Brain Bins are easy to create and implement and make a world of difference in supporting all learners throughout the school day. The W.I.S.E Choice: A simple and effective formula for emotionally controlled decision making.
Friday February 21, 2025 10:30am - 11:30am MST
In the face of adversity, it is common to feel engulfed by stress, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions. Learning to navigate and master these emotional challenges is pivotal in steering clear of decisions that can derail our lives. Through the experience of losing his hand and almost his life, Levi teaches valuable strategies for approaching decision-making with clarity and intention, fostering a mindset crucial in shifting from being a victim to becoming an achiever and from following others to leading with confidence. Attendees will leave the event understanding the following: By mastering the art of managing our thoughts, we have the ability to steer our emotions towards making logical and sound judgments. How to assess the cost-benefit dynamics: evaluating the trade-offs between our decisions and their ensuing consequences. The necessity of research to comprehend the full scope of a situation before responding, as every narrative presents multiple sides for consideration. Encouraging thoughtful reflection on how our decisions impact the lives of those we hold dear fosters a sense of responsibility and empathy in our choices. Recognizing that our errors and misjudgments are inherent in the human experience, vital for personal development when we can learn from them and move forward.

Designing Valid, Reliable, and Fair Constructed-Response Questions that Increase Student Success
Friday February 21, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
Designing valid, reliable, and fair constructed-response questions that provide students with a high chance of success is challenging for teachers. Too often we resort to what we have seen in past courses be they in high school or university. Particularly ln the latter case, our most recent experiences with constructed response questions may not be the best preparation for what we encounter in secondary schools. These students are not all English majors nor do they necessarily appreciate or enjoy writing. Without a solid design structure, students may write very little or far too much and still miss the expectation. This session will focus upon various steps that, when followed, aid teachers in the design of constructed response questions. Though perhaps of particular interest to teachers not accustomed to teaching writing or ELA, it is open for any one at any point in their career. Participants are highly encouraged to bring examples of their own constructed response questions to analyse against the steps outlined in this session.

AI & Learning Strategies
Friday February 21, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
The usability of AI is growing in leaps and bounds. How can AI be used to assist students learn how to learn? We’ll focus on a couple of the most common ways AI is used in educational circles: 1) as an idea generator and muse; 2) as a writing coach and exemplar generator; 3) as a content synthesizer and question generator; and 4) as a socratic coach and conversationalist. We’ll pay close attention to the idea of epistemological resonance; matching the way people learn to process and code information with the way AI’s generate and present information. While you can fight AI, we’ve found some amazing parallels with respect to it and the way you teach gifted students with overbalanced analytical tendencies. When teaching with AI’s, meta-cognition matters. Discussion is related to high school humanities courses, but it’s general enough to apply to any Div III or Div IV teacher.

As we think, we live.
Friday February 21, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
In 1925 Alfred North Whitehead wrote “As we think, we live”. He saw the trajectory the world was on. What is wrong with the way we think? How did we come to think of the world as a commodity to be owned and exploited? As teachers we help frame the thinking of each new generation, and the way we live has led to the global crises of today. What are we implicitly telling our students about the world and our relationship within it when they walk hallways that separate science from art. Process thinking challenges the bifurcation of the world into subjects and objects, artists and scientists. It places the beauty of a sunset on equal terms with the electromagnetic radiation that objectifies it. Both are part of Nature. This session introduces PROcess a seven-lesson course on Process Thinking for students and should be of interest to anyone who wonders about the link between how their students think and what they go on to do in the world.

Introducing HSISSFF: Your High School’s Independent Shakespeare Short Film Festival!
Friday February 21, 2025 12:00pm - 1:00pm MST
Looking for new ways to get your students excited about Shakespeare? Consider running your own Shakespeare short film festival! In this authentic, creative assessment, students go beyond basic comprehension and analysis, and leap into creative synthesis by combining the close reading of Shakespearean drama with exploratory, independent film viewing, ultimately creating their own short film adaptations of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the style of a contemporary filmmaker of their choice. In this project, students research filmmakers, study their aesthetics, and create their own short film to be screened at a school-wide film festival. Students become personally invested in their own unique interpretations of the Bard’s plays and contribute authentically to the ongoing discussion of the relevance of Shakespeare in today’s world. Session attendees will view films from past film festivals and be given tips on creating their own film festivals, using adaptable student handouts and materials from past festivals.
