Reading, Writing, Speaking: The Metacognition Connection

Metacognitive practices help students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses as readers and writers as well as speakers, problem solvers, and group members. The question for teachers and students is not simply, “what are you learning?”, but “how are you learning?”. This session will clarify the connection between language and metacognition and provide ways for teachers to incorporate explicit strategies to support students in becoming more metacognitively active learners.

Students require specialized skills to be able to cope with the different reading and writing demands of the subject areas. The language demands of each subject is unique and the ways in which students are required to communicate may not cross over from one discipline to another. This session will provide teachers with practical and useful tools that students can use to visualize, organize and structure their thinking to improve their reading, writing and communicating across all subject areas.

International Buffalo Relations Institute (IBRI) collaborated with the Galt Museum and Archives | Akaisamitohkanao’pa on an upcoming exhibit titled Buffalo Treaty: Keystone to Wellness.

Raising Buffalo Consciousness for Truth and Reconciliation

The session will explore the story of the buffalo as a wonderful entry point for students and teachers to learn about land, indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing, and the truth and reconciliation process. The session will explore the Buffalo Treaty and the work of the International Buffalo Relations Institute (IBRI) in raising buffalo consciousness. The session will also share ideas and resources to support student learning in the classroom, as well as teacher professional learning.
